James Barnor's photographs at Serpentine North Gallery

James Barnor's photographs at Serpentine North Gallery

This is a show of warmth and character, like the photographer himself, James Barnor. Born in Accra, Ghana, the 92 year old photographer has captured the beauty and excitement of changes in Ghana during it’s independence from the British in 1957 and then recorded 1960s London.

His portraits are exquisite. Several front covers for Drum magazine were captured in West London, there are some great images of sixties fashion, cars, people. In the late 1970s Barnor returned to Ghana and worked there as a government photographer and then portraitist for 20 years.

From 19th May - 24th October, Serpentine North Gallery, closed on Mondays. A catalogue is available from the Serpentine shop.
